At Laut Design, our unique team combines industrial designers and graphic designers under the same roof. Both sides use the same proven process to create. It starts and ends with you. After all, you know your product and brand better than anyone. Our work begins after a client brief.
You know your product better than anyone, which is why you are involved at every step in the design process. Does the product need to be rugged or friendly and inviting? Is it geared toward the novice or the expert user? The first step is the client brief to outline your goals and expectations, followed by the kick off meeting, where you can meet the designers on your team and explain your vision to them firsthand.
After reviewing your brief and meeting with your team, we look for answers to questions like, “What are competitors doing well? How can your product stand out? What emerging trends might this product capitalize on?” We also study clever innovations and useful features from unrelated industries to glean inspiration for the mechanics, functionality, or overall look of your product. We gather the information, organize the data, and present our findings to ensure you agree with our design direction.
We start with sketches to clarify the direction. Sketches are quick, low-cost, and effective, and we produce a multitude in phase 1. We pull together the strongest concepts and outline considerations around form, function, and aesthetics. At the conclusion of Phase 1, we present our research findings and initial product concepts in a story-based presentation.
Our team will help yours choose one to three of your favorite concepts from the first phase. Incorporating your feedback, we add, subtract, and combine ideas to create a new body of work. We then show a variety of alternative options aimed at homing in on your vision.
Once we have established your favorite design concept, we make final modifications based on your feedback. This ensures clear direction and total satisfaction, and it sets the stage for the phases that follow. For example, by starting the product design process with pen-on-paper sketches, we can move confidently into digital 3D CAD and minimize the risk of wasted effort or costly revisions.
With your chosen design in hand, we translate the visual into the digital, modeling the concept in 3D CAD to define proportions, dimensions, and overall form factor. The end result of this phase is beautiful, lifelike digital renderings of your product, shown from any angle and in context. These images are immensely valuable, as they allow you to gather feedback from potential customers, generate excitement with your stakeholders, and produce compelling print or digital marketing materials.
Nothing sets Laut Design apart more than our prototyping capabilities. We don’t design anything without considering how it will eventually be produced, in part because our next directive is to build the first of its kind in our fabrication shop. Whether it’s a wooden block model to validate size and form or a fully functional, indistinguishable-from-the-real-thing prototype, we can validate the design and move your product closer to production right here in house.
Absolutely. You know your business better than anyone and are an integral part of the design process. We incorporate your vision and feedback at every step. Keeping communication consistent and targeted as well as setting aside purposeful times for feedback allows our team to do our best work.

No, in fact it is often preferable that intellectual property be filed after we complete concept development, refinement, and prototyping work. This allows for better protection and longevity in your patent filing.
Cost varies based on the scope of the full project. Feel free to submit a no-obligation Product Design Brief or Branding Creative Brief. A project manager from our team will learn about your needs and follow up with a brief phone conversation to ensure we’d make a good fit. From there, we’ll submit an estimate that includes each phase of your project.
Yes. If you need updates to your existing CAD model, we’re happy to provide those. If you already have a recognizable, professional logo that resonates with your clients, we can work with you to evolve it. Minor updates may include a more modern color palette, typeface, or subtle style changes.
100%. Once created, your CAD model, renderings, logo, or other design is yours to keep. You have full license to trademark or copyright as desired.
File types provided are dependent on the type of project requested. For CAD modeling, you’ll receive a Solidworks/Fusion modeling file that is exportable into various formats. For logo designs, you’ll receive files for both print (CMYK) and digital (RGB) applications. Each package is custom to your brand’s unique needs but generally includes .eps, .png, .jpg, and .pdf files. Additional file types are available on request.
Yes. Once created, your final logo or product design and supporting CAD models are yours to keep. You have full license to trademark or copyright as desired.
